FAQs

  • What is the difference between high-quality ROLLTEC® awnings and other brands?

Most of our awnings' components are produced in our Concord, Ontario, Canada factory. We only use high-quality materials like stainless steel and extruded aluminum. To ensure we maintain the highest quality standards, our sewing operations are computerized, which provides flawless stitching and seams on all our awning fabric covers. Our engineering team is constantly designing and perfecting all aspects of our awning technology.

  • Is it true that fabric awnings improve energy efficiency?

Yes they do! A study conducted by the American Society of Heating and Air Conditioning has shown that awnings over your windows can reduce indoor temperatures by as much as 12ºC. They can also reduce heat gain by 55-65% for southern exposure and up to 72-77% for western exposure. This results in significant energy savings resulting in lower energy costs.

  • Do you installation awnings?

Our installation department services the following areas: ● Regina● Moose Jaw● Estevan● Swift Current● Weyburn

  • Can retractable awnings be used for light rain?

Yes! As long as the awning has a minimum slope of 15° or greater. Anything less than 15° will lead to water collecting on top of the fabric and causing it to stretch.

  • Is the awning fabric waterproof?

No, but the fabric is water-repellent. That means that the water will not soak freely through the fabric, and the rain will run off. Once the rain has subsided, we recommend letting the awning dry out before retracting it. However, it is safe to roll up a wet awning for one or two nights if bad weather persists. Please refer to the previous question for slope requirements to use the awning for rain protection.

  • Can retractable awning be used during snowfall?

No. A small amount of snow will not hurt the awning, but heavy snow will accumulate on top of it and put too much weight on the fabric and the frame.

  • Should awnings be rolled up during strong winds? And how strong is strong?

Yes, you should retract your awnings during high winds. We recommend retracting your awnings when the wind is strong enough to make you uncomfortable being outside. Generally, our retractable awnings can withstand winds up to 30-35 km/hour. This does not account for wind gusts. Generally, retractable awnings should be rolled up each night and should never be left open unattended.

  • Can I adjust the slope of my awning after installation?

Yes! The method of adjusting the slope will depend on the model. The Adalia X3M Plus™ and Tilt-O-Shade™ models will allow you to adjust the slope with a hand crank. Other models require a few simple tools to make the adjustment.

  • I would like a retractable awning for my home, but I'm worried it will be difficult to operate. Is there a solution?

You can consider adding a spring assist to a manually operated awning to make operation easier. Another option is having your awning equipped with a remote-controlled motor. In this case, you will have a handheld remote which allows you to extend, retract or stop the awning at any position. Various other electronic devices are available (such as weather sensors, etc.) with motorized awnings.

  • I would like a retractable awning for my home, but I have limited space. How do I tell if installation is possible?

Give us a call or send us an email! There are many different ways to install an awning on your home. We have years of experience figuring out the best solution. We will ask you a few specific questions about the construction of your home and the area you want to have it installed in and make recommendations. To make things even easier, please take pictures of the location and email them to us!

  • Can I clean the fabric on my awning if it gets dirty?

Being outside, your awnings will get dirty. The good news is the fabric can be easily washed. You can do this by gently brushing off any loose dirt or debris and then hosing the fabric with clean water. Never use a power washer, as this can damage the fabric. We recommend using a solution of water and mild natural soap (i.e. Ivory Snow® or Woolite®) and a soft cloth or bristled brush to clean off any dirt. The water should be cold to lukewarm (never warmer than 100°F or 35°C). Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap and leave the awning extended to ensure it dries. Regular maintenance (2 to 3 per year) on your awnings ensures they last their expected lifespan and maintain their appearance.

For more stubborn stains, add a small amount of bleach or Dawn® dish soap to your cleaning solution. Ensure to rinse well to remove all cleaning products and allow the awnings to dry completely.

  • What is the maximum width of retractable awnings?

The only limit for our awnings is the dimensions of your building. We can make awnings in practically any width by fitting more than two arms together. Generally, awnings under 20' will be more stable in high wind conditions, have a longer lifespan and be easier to operate. For wider areas, we can install multiple awnings side by side.

  • Are retractable awnings available in standard sizes?

Our awnings are custom-made to our client's specifications. Custom widths are available in one-inch increments. Lateral arms, which determine the projection of your awning, are available in 6 standard sizes.

  • Some of the retractable awnings on your Products page look very similar to other models. What is the difference between them?

The main difference between most of our conventional retractable awnings is their function as opposed to their appearance. For example, the Adalia X3M Extenda™ provides an awning that is longer than its width, the Physique XL™ has 13-foot-long arms, and the Tilt-O-Shade™ allows you to adjust the slope of individual arms using a hand crank. To figure out which awning is right for you, visit Our Products page or contact us.

  • Can you print graphics or text on the fabric?

Yes, we can! We are certified to use the Sunbrella Graphics System for high-quality and consistent results for printing on our awnings.

  • If something happens to my awning, can the broken part be replaced, or does the whole awning need to be replaced?

One of the best benefits of dealing with a local Canadian supplier is how easy it is to access replacement parts. Depending on which part and how much it was damaged, most parts can easily be replaced. If the awning is severely damaged or extremely old, it might be easier to buy a new awning.

  • So how much do awnings cost?

There is no easy answer, as each awning is custom-made to fit your needs. We must factor in all the various options that determine the cost. We will need to ask you some questions before we can quote you. The best way to get a proper estimate is to arrange a free in-home consultation with our team. If you are outside our service area, please contact us, and we will help you find a dealer near you.

  • Can the homeowner install awnings?

Absolutely! Anyone with basic DIY skills and the proper tools can install awnings. We include a detailed step-by-step installation manual to make it simple for you.

  • How much sun is blocked by the awnings?

Approximately 95% to 98% of UV rays are blocked. Even the lightest fabric allows for adequate time you can spend without protection under the awning avoiding potential skin damage. For example, a person with light skin risks sunburn in case of unprotected exposure after 5 to 10 minutes. The same person can stay under the awning with the lightest fabric for 150 to 300 minutes, and as the fabric gets darker, you can spend more time.

  • What is the average life expectancy of the fabric on a retractable awning? Can the fabric be replaced?

The fabric top is made from solution-dyed acrylic, lasting ten to fifteen years as long as you clean and maintain them. Lifespan can also be affected by how often you use your awning and the pollution in your area. The fabric top can be replaced, and the original hardware can be used if necessary. The approximate cost for the fabric replacement vs replacing the entire awning is 40 to 50%.

  • Do you offer window or door awnings as well?
